The Basics of Work Items
•        Work Items are Team project tasks assigned to team members.

•        This illustration above shows several things that you interact with when managing Team project Work
Items.
-        On the right side, Team Explorer holds a canned listing of (process template specific) Team Queries and
any custom queries that you create.
-        On the left side are the results for the Work Item query. Each Work Item can also be opened for a more
detailed description.
•        The primary way that you interact with Work Items within a Team project is through Work Item
Queries.
-        Work Item Queries allow you to pull certain queries from TFS storage (SQL Server 2005) for reading,
updating and deletion.
•        You can see that the “All Tasks” query is selected.

-        You can choose to perform a query right within Visual Studio by choosing “Open” or “View Results”.
-        An experienced project manager may prefer to open these query results in Microsoft Excel or
Microsoft Project, thus explaining the use of those context menu options.

•        The “Work Item Tracking – Query View” toolbar also offers you the capability to open a query with
Excel or Project.

•        You can also add and assign additional Work Items for a Team member.
-        This is accomplished using either the Team Explorer context menu or the Team dropdown menu.
-        Looking ahead, you learn more about creating and managing Work Items in another chapter.
