TF (Team Foundation)
• You may recall from the first chapter, Team Foundation is the largest part of VSTS (Visual Studio
Team System).
- You have already learned the five team editions of Visual Studio.
• Team Explorer is an add-in for Visual Studio 2005.
- It grants team members’ access to the current projects as well as source control, team builds, work
items, areas and iterations, project documents, project portal and project membership.
- Team Explorer is installed off of the TFS installation CD.
• Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Project offer project work items in a familiar UI to project managers.
- Excel 2003 and Project 2005 work with the released edition of TFS.
- Excel 2007 and Project 2007 require VSTS SP1.
• Not surprisingly, the largest part of TF is TFS (Team Foundation Server).
- This includes an installation of Windows 2003/Windows 2003 R2 with the latest service packs, IIS 6.0,
WSS (Windows SharePoint Services) and SQL 2005 Standard or better.
- Installation should be followed carefully and on a fresh installation of Windows 2003.
- You should install VS SP1 and TFS SP1 when installation is completed for higher security, enhanced
functionality and greater performance.
• TFS is compatible with every version of Visual Studio and other development tools.
- Some functionality is lost, however, when not used with VS Standard or above.
- For example, access to TFS Source Control is limited to Team Explorer if you’re using some other
development tool.
• The team roles must be identified for your project.
- Identify project roles, such the PM (Project manager), architect(s), developers, testers, database
developer and project owner.
- Identify who fulfills those roles. You may not need all the roles listed and some people can fulfill more
than one role.
- The tools installed on the project members’ machines are based on your findings.
